Anorexia Nervosa Treatment during COVID-19: In-Office and Telehealth Options at The Kahm Clinic
Struggling with Anorexia Nervosa during COVID-19
These are exceptionally challenging times for all of us, and the current situation presents additional difficulties for those struggling with Anorexia. One of the tenets of Anorexia is a feeling of a lack of control which can trigger restriction of food. This acts as a coping mechanism as one point in their lives they can manage.
And now, with COVID-19, there is so much more that feels out of our control.
We all feel it.
This may lead to increased food restriction for this already susceptible population of individuals struggling with eating disorders, in particular those with Anorexia. Additionally, from years of experience our team understands that malnutrition may weaken the immune system, and all else being equal, may put this population at a higher risk during COVID-19 than others.
Social Distancing and Anorexia Nervosa
Social distancing and safety restrictions, although necessary in the current climate – and lifting in some areas, may further exacerbate a maladaptive way of thinking and instigate a slide back in to eating disordered behaviors. For example, if an individual struggling with Anorexia cannot adhere to their normal exercise routine, they may consume less food to compensate. Depending on the individuals’ relationship with family members and their living situation, remaining quarantined at home may worsen eating disordered behaviors. As well, with social distancing comes isolation, which may increase a tendency to self-isolate in the midst of struggling with behaviors. All of this is to say that our upside-down world has created specific headwinds for eating disorder thoughts and behaviors that make the situation even more dangerous than in “normal” times. Finally, there is an additional level of anxiety of infection which may interfere with seeking treatment at an inpatient facility.
Getting Help for Those Struggling with Anorexia Nervosa
Many individuals with Anorexia Nervosa – and their family members – may not be aware they are struggling. And, for those who do realize they may have an eating disorder, seeking assistance may still be frightening. The eating disorder simultaneously acts as both their good friend and adversary; there is a sense of security and calm they do not want to surrender. In these unpredictable times, it is even more challenging to relinquish that sense of security, even if it is causing harm to oneself.
